John Denver, Karen Carpenter, and Julie Andrews.

Who do I think have the best voices ever in the history of singing?

Their names are in the title of this blog.

And yes, I am a colossal dork. With a capital D. But I embrace it.

A few days ago, I was messing around on YouTube. I was bored, what can I say? Anyways, I had found an awesome clip quite some time ago, with John Denver and Julie Andrews. It was shown during her 1987 Christmas special that aired on TV. I watched it again. Here, you watch:

Judging from the look on Julie's face when John starts singing, I think this was an impromptu song choice. These two voices just blend together so well. John's harmony is simply amazing.

I really don't have to explain why Julie Andrews has an incredible voice. I think everyone knows that. John Denver, however, is different. His voice mesmerizes me, and I don't quite know why. He's an incredible songwriter, definitely. But that voice is just so pure, so clean....I blame my cousins and Aunt Jackie for this John Denver love; it was at their house, at a cookout, where I first heard him sing when I was around 7 years old. And that was it - I had to have his album. This was in about 1977. His first Greatest Hits album came out in 1973 and that was the album they were playing. I remember watching the news in October 1997 when they broke in to say that John Denver died in a plane crash. I cried for hours. To have a man like this, with a voice like this, taken from us - it was incomprehensible.

In addition to Julie Andrews, the best female voice I have ever heard is, hands-down, Karen Carpenter. I cried my face off when she died. I was only 12 years old and already back then I was in love with The Carpenters and my pre-pubescent brain did not understand how this could happen.

Sit back and listen to her sing sometime. Just close your eyes and listen, really LISTEN to the purity in her voice. Here, I'll help you. But close your eyes!

It's so effortless for her. It just flows out of her. She was simply amazing. Best voice ever.

Now I am a HUUUGE fan of American Idol. Have been since season 2, and Clay Aiken.

None of these people can hold a candle to any of the three I have listed here.

And it still makes me sad to know that we'll never hear any of these three sing live again. Two are no longer with us, and Julie is no longer able to sing.

The world is a bit more silent as a result.

  1. I too love the duet of John and Julie singing Edelweis. I saw John in two live concerts, had tickets to see him again, yet my daughter was born that day :) I too miss John and Karen. I am thankful for heaven for here all our hellos turn into goodbyes; only in heaven will our hellos survive. Big hug to you.
